The pilgrim’s perspective

I had a conversation the other day with a friend about the pilgrim’s perspective view on life events. It occurred to me that it is the antidote for our default reactions to desperate events. There are many ways to face the day to day, “it all hits the fan” moments. See if you recognize any of these default modes. Many will be defiant. Some will be defeated and some (I can relate) will just become numb and try to do the minimum to get by. Others get angry while others are so happy it’s irritating. Some may also try depression, over indulgence, diminishment, and checking out in front of the TV, just to name a few. The list makes me tired and sad.

The Pilgrim walks though life with the anticipation that whatever happens has a purpose to personal growth. The Pilgrim looks at everything that happens as a part of growing up. Pain is assumed and accepted as necessary, like a workout program. As a Marine will tell you “pain is weakness leaving the body”. However, pain comes with the walk. It is not the only means of anticipated life lessons. There is beauty and joy that affects the growing process as well. The Pilgrim is looking to not misinterpret what is happening. He is constantly asking a higher source for guidance to the education.

Part of me wants to respond with anticipation of my education and part of me wants to react in my default mode. This is a pilgrims’ lesson as well as, to learn to respond like a pilgrim. So this Pilgrim’s prayer is that I accept the educational program for my better and know that greener pastures are ahead in this Pilgrim’s progress.
