The family and I went to my younger bothers wedding over the weekend and had a wonderful time. The town and surrounding area has changed but much of the original icons still exist. I saw family I hadn’t seen in years and it was good to catch up and see how big their kids have grown. I also saw two of my Great Aunts and they proclaimed it was good to be seen at all. The wedding was beautiful. It was a simple country wedding in a small church in Fredericksburg with a reception that followed. The couple looked so happy. This reminds me of a story that happened over twenty years ago. During my childhood, every summer when the peaches were in season, typically in mid to late June, my family would buy truck loads of this wonderful hill country fruit and haul it to the desert of West Texas, Midland, Texas to be exact. Those fruit starved folks would buy that fresh fruit without hesitation. One day we were loading up the family van with some of the largest peaches I’d ever seen. Maybe it was my childhood imagination running away with me, but these peaches were larger than a grown mans fist and that was the average. One particular peach stood out among the rest. It was significantly larger than any person had ever seen in all of history. It was magnificent. So that particular bushel was set on the front bench seat just in reach of someone’s little hands. Through the rush of the work at hand, because he was younger and being out of site, was also out of mind, my little brother sitting in his car seat reached over and grabbed the monstrosity that was as big as his head and began to devoir it. By the time he was discovered he had already consumed most of the peach and was drench from head to lap in peach juice and grinning from ear to ear.
He got married this past weekend on the sixty fifth wedding anniversary of our grandparents. They were both present and I was given the honor of being the best man. The memories made this past week will last a lifetime. All memories of us as kids returned and I just realized he has raided the bushel basket again and has chosen one beauty just for him. He knew what he wanted and without reservation or hesitation he made his claim. They are married now and on their honeymoon and he probably has that “I got away with it” grin, from ear to ear, on his face yet again!
Congratulations you two!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
